How Much Does a Soccer Ball Cost

Soccer Ball Cost HeaderSoccer ball cost analysis - by Bruce Lovelace

The number of companies that sell soccer balls is staggering, so it can be overwhelming to try to choose one. This post answers the question of how much a soccer ball costs. If you're purchasing for a team, you will save money by buying a full set of balls rather than buy one soccer ball individually.

Individual soccer ball prices fall in a range from $5 for bargain quality, size 3 balls up to $40 for size 5 higher quality soccer balls. Premium balls make up the top tier of soccer balls and range from $40 to $280. Soccer balls have a cheaper per ball cost to buy if you purchase them for an entire team all at the same time.

The cost of soccer balls varies a lot, but there are 4 general categories when it comes to price ranges. There are differences in the materials used, the overall design, and the craftmanship that goes into each type of soccer ball. Here is a breakdown of price ranges for soccer balls and their corresponding category.

BARGAIN $5-15 Good for the casual soccer player with moderate use. Also the best way to go for kids ages 2-5 years old.
GOOD QUALITY $15-$40 By far, the largest majority of soccer balls purchased in the USA fit into this category. Very affordable and durable.
HIGH QUALITY $35-125 High performance balls. Usually not used for training and practices, but reserved for use in match play.
PREMIUM $80-$200 For the very serious player who wants the ultimate in performance. Good for those soccer players who want a ball that responds with precision.

average cost per year for a soccer ball

Getting a slightly better made soccer ball could save you money in the long run. As an example a size 3 soccer ball could last for 3 years. If your 3 year old plays when she is 3, 4, and 5 years old, the average cost for a $30 ball would only be $10/year. (30/3 = 10).

Soccer balls can last longer than that, particularly with the younger players who don't kick as hard. When I ran a local youth soccer franchise, I had some of the size 3 soccer balls last for 5 years. We got them at a large discount because of the volume ordered so the soccer ball cost per year was quite low.

How long a ball lasts is determined by how many times it's kicked and whether it's left outside. Too many wet/dry and heat/cold cycles may shorten its life and increase the average cost per year for any give soccer ball. If a soccer ball is not taken care of it will wear out faster and your cost will rise.

Practice training soccer balls vs. soccer match balls cost

Soccer balls designed for training have a different price than soccer balls designed for playing soccer matches. Training soccer balls use more durable materials to stand up to the extra wear and tear of continuous practice sessions. They contain a thinner layer of foam which makes the ball play a little harder and longer lasting. Longer lasting balls have a lower cost per use

Match balls are designed for the ultimate in performance with less emphasis on making them last longer. Since you use them a whole lot less, they automatically have a higher cost.

why some soccer balls are so expensive

Expensive soccer ball diagram

Some soccer balls are cheap and some are expensive and it may seem hard to understand why. It depends on what they're made of. One of the factors that makes up an important difference in price is what each soccer ball is made of.

The more expensive soccer balls are made of 100% Polyurethane. Cheaper soccer balls are made up of a mix of Polyurethane and PVC or just plain PVC to lower the cost.

Also involved in determining how expensive a soccer ball will be is the type of bladder used and the number of layers designed into the ball. More expensive balls will have multiple inner layers of cotton and polyester to make the ball more durable, hold its shape, and feel better to the touch.

How much is the most expensive soccer ball

The most expensive real soccer ball I found was from New York City, of course. Custom made, it retails for $375.

I also found a Brazilian decorated soccer ball listed at $5000. I'm assuming that was not a real price, most likely a misprint because the ball seemed to be quite ordinary. This soccer ball is made by Rhinox , being sold on, and marketed by a company called I & S Merchandise LLC.
